Hortus Conclusus

Hortus Conclusus

It is a Latin phrase referring to the typical medieval garden, born in the monasteries where it was used for the cultivation of food and medicinal plants, it quickly became a symbol of the lost paradise.

In large monasteries the structure of the hortus conclusus followed the instructions of the Rule of San Benedetto da Norcia, dictated by the monk in 534 AD, which were: an area dedicated to vegetable gardens (horti), one dedicated to orchards (pomaria), gardens with trees (viridaria ) and finally a part dedicated to medicinal herbs (herbaria).

At the Il Sentiero Nel Bosco you will be able to experience our Hortus Conclusus so as to get to know its history and symbolism. Learn cooking recipes and medicinal preparations from the ancient Benedictine abbeys. Ours desire is to be a real tribute to the place where the Benedictine monks of the nearby Abbey of Sassovivo once lived.
"Hortus conclusus soror mea, sponsa, hortus conclusus, fons signatus"
«Closed garden you are, my sister, bride, closed garden, sealed fountain».
